Featuring Premium Midnight Bedrooms, extreme durability and extraordinary living space, Vango's Somerton 650XL is one of the best choices for up to 6 campers looking to get a large amount of space for their money. An extended living space with an enclosed front canopy creates a brilliant indoor living area and leaves plenty of room for a large 420cm wide sleeping area that can comfortably fit 6 people with room for double or single airbeds. This really is an excellent tent for families or larger groups of friends that want to have great protection from the elements as well as an ideal amount of space for their holidays or weekend trips. The Vango Somerton 650XL comes in a stunning Sky Blue colourway and will certainly take centre stage at the campsite you pitch up on.
The structure of Vango Somerton 650XL is made up of 5 PowerFlex® Fibreglass poles that are lightweight and flexible meaning they can adapt to different weather conditions and still stand strong. The durability of these poles is beyond that of the competition, not a single gust will breach the stability of your tent. These poles are all the same size and come Pre-Angled making for a much faster pitching process due to the chance of mixing up the poles being absent. To support this structure, the intuitive TBS®II Tension Band System is used at the rear of the tent on the border between the living space and the bedroom. This system involves two adjustable straps that connect at the peak of the Vango Somerton 650XL, when connected they can be tightened to suit the needs of your environment. They are capable of creating an internal triangular shape, (which is the ideal shape for tents) that can be a brace in adverse wind conditions as they are connected to the poles of your tent at 3 locations, reducing sideways sway and overall reducing the risk of the tent failing.
The fabric for the Somerton 650XL is Sentinel Dura which is impeccably strong and is an improvement over other materials such as the Sentinel Active fabric. The Hydrostatic Head is 4000mm HH so you can rest easy knowing the Somerton's interior is well protected from the elements. Although it's 30% stronger than Sentinel Active, it doesn't compromise on its other selling points such as its extremely lightweight 68 G/M² making it optimised for durability and pack size. Much like with other Sentinel fabrics, the Dura comes with full factory taped seams providing a watertight seal in the harshest of rainfall. The Vango Somerton comes in a beautiful Sky Blue colour and we wouldn't want to see that fade away with time, that's why Dura Fabric has ColourLok™ Technology to maintain colour retention against UV light. The UV Protection Factor for this fabric is UPF30+ so you can feel confident in your tent's aesthetic and practical life span.
So you have complete protection from heavy rainfall, but what about moisture and water on the ground? The Vango Somerton 650XL has included a Fully Sewn-In Groundsheet to eliminate the risk of water seeping into the surface of your tent. The Groundsheet is Waterproof PE, removing any chance for a wet floor, as well as this, the fact that it is sewn-in means it can prevent cold draughts and bugs from disturbing your comforting indoor environment. To help with this function, a storm skirt is also built-in to further add to wind and bug protection. An optional footprint can be purchased to help keep the Somerton's groundsheet clean and protected against stones and gravel pitches.
When choosing a tent this size, you're really going to want to make sure you have all the space you need for a group of roughly 6 people. That's why the Vango Somerton 650XL has 'XL' in its name! a spacious bedroom, open living space and a enclosed front canopy allow for multi-functionality with plenty of room for furniture and other accessories. The front entrance leads directly to the general living area, these two parts of the tent act as a Double Section Living space, the enclosed front canopy is completely covered and the sheer amount of depth you get in both the canopy and living room is exceptional. You could easily fit all the chairs, tables and other additions that you could need in the Vango Somerton. Once inside the tent you'll notice just how much headroom there is due to the Box-Shape created by the Pre-Angles Poles, these also offer great corner space when compared to traditional 'circular' tents allowing you to place chairs right up against the sides of your tent and still have more than enough room. An ideal layout for a tent this size would be to have your chairs and tables off to the sides of the main living area which leaves an open walkway straight down the middle. You could then place your cooking units, wet kit or other items such as bicycles in the enclosed canopy area, the number of layouts and configurations are limitless, it's hard to imagine any 6 person group running out of space in the Vango Somerton 650XL. For a true home-from-home experience we would recommend considering the optional fleece carpet for extra comfort underfoot.
Moving to the rear of the Somerton you'll find the Midnight Bedroom area, this wide-opening bedroom space presents enough room for each camper and can be divided into 3 sections: 120cm, 140cm and 160cm or left as one open sleeping space if you wish, Rear ventilation pockets are located at the top of the tent to reduce moisture and keep a comfortable level of airflow when sleeping. Storage Pockets are placed in the bedrooms to let you store your essential items and there is no step over to enter the Bedrooms meaning midnight tripping hazards aren't a possibility. When awake from a good night's sleep, you're going to want to enjoy your morning coffee in the living space or the enclosed front canopy area. To let the beautiful sunrise brighten up your morning, multiple Diamond Clear Windows have been placed in both living spaces offering a panoramic view on all sides except for the rear (sleeping area). The windows in the main area have privacy curtains which can be rolled up to completely or half cover your windows. The windows in the front section are on both sides and scale the whole height of the tent for a bright and airy environment, the Front Door also has two panels. Overall, the amount of space you're getting for a £600 tent is astronomical and the interior of your tent is going to be lit up with natural light all day long.
There are many other additional features that are smaller in detail but still important to be included in the Vango Somerton's design. For example: Lantern Hanging Points are located above the front entrance, living space entrance, main area a bedroom entrance, this amount of lighting solutions will surely provide enough light during the night. But if this wasn't enough, Velcro points have been placed along the Bedroom Pole to let you place other light sources such as a Vango Sunbeam Flexi Kit. These lead to a convenient cable entry point which runs through to the enclosed front canopy allowing you to have mains access without the need of a door being open. Speaking of doors, a smaller side door is available and is used by opening the mesh door at the back of the tent, this has a small canopy overhead to stop water from dripping onto your floor. To stop moisture and to maintain airflow, AirZone Low-Level Panels are included in the living space. Pitching is an important part of a Tents abilities, that's why High Visibility Guylines are included as well as Front and Rear Storm Anchors which secure the tent and give peace of mind knowing your tent will be stable in unsuitable conditions. The Tent has been Fully Wind and Rain Tested and uses Fire Retardant Fabrics meeting European Safety Standards EN5912. Finally, when your holidays are over, and it's time to pack away your Vango Somerton 650XL, an expandable carry bag is included that has an oversized opening to make packing away much easier and simpler - it also has compression straps allowing you to control the pack size.
In conclusion, the Vango Somerton 650XL is a robust and spacious tent that will satisfy any group of campers up to 6 people. It's aesthetically pleasing and has all the features you could ever desire for a tent at this price point.
